Contact Forms are a Pain

So important, but *so so fiddly*. Argh!

Contact forms are an interesting kind of beast—equal parts funnel and frustration. They’re notoriously fiddly (CSRF issues, email deliverability headaches) but incredibly high value when they work right. Leads are the lifeblood of any online business, after all.

I’m building my own site with Laravel at the moment, and even though I know my way around backend logic, the contact form has been a solid reminder that this stuff is never quite as simple as it looks.

The main culprit? CSRF problems. If you’ve ever tangled with CORS, you know the pain—like a four-letter word you shouldn’t even joke about with another developer.

I’ve found a few solid third-party solutions I could just drop into the site while I work on a fully integrated setup (also planning to add some mini CTA forms to headers and landing pages along the way):

Fillout.com — The one I’m using for now. 1,000 responses per month on the free plan, which clinched it for me. $15/mo to ditch their branding.

Jotform.com — Looks solid, but a lot pricier at $35/month for the basic tier.

Typeform.com — The supposed leader in this space, but their free tier caps at 10 responses a month. Ten. Absolutely bonkers.

(Side note: That $15/mo on Fillout is only if you pay annually. It’s $20/mo otherwise. Love a sneaky upsell. Right into the sea with that nonsense.)

Ditching the third-party branding is definitely a priority, but $15/month stings a bit when I know I could build it myself. That said, the hours I’d spend wrangling CORS nonsense would probably cost me more than a year’s subscription, so it’s a trade-off for now.

The takeaway? Contact forms are a perfect storm of friction, cost, and reward. It’s a part of web development that feels more like plumbing than coding, but when it’s airtight, it’s worth every penny.

What other dev pain points are worth the price of just outsourcing the problem?
